Cromford Canal - A Bit Muggy ~ 20/06/26

Afternoon!

We went for a walk today around Cromford Canal! We frequently go to Matlock and Castleton, have been doing it for years and we occasionally pop off at Cromford Mills for a little mooch around...However, we've never been on a walk around the Canal before and it was lovely...although a bit muggy (Humid).

We set off quite late today, around 12pm, picked up Sam's Dad who came along for the walk which was lovely and off we went, mind you we didn't go our normal route and ended up going down the M1 which turned out to be a much longer drive to get there!

We parked up at Cromford Mills and then off we went down the canal, there were these mysterious colourful dinosaurs planted along the canal, which we could only assume we're placed there by the Narrow Boaters & Canoe gliders...all the while it made some interesting snaps!

We reached a halfway point and stopped off at High Peak Junction, where we had a snack and something to drink from the lovely cafe and then a look around the free museum. We then set off again down the other side of the canal and reached the Aqueduct Cottage, which is now used as an Art Gallery, and has been there since 1802! It was since renovated in 2019.

There's a lovely little woods behind the cottage, where we got a perfect view and did some more milage before we decided to turn back otherwise we'd be miles from the car.

Our journey took us, back along the canal, where we stopped off again at the little cafe for some refreshments, and then eventually back to the car. We found some cool little miniatures of the museum made out of wood too.

It has been a lovely little 4 mile walk today, not many inclines and generally quite flat. The weather was perfect, even if a bit too warm and muggy but it made a change for the cold and rain we've seen all the way into June! Summer is finally here it seems in South Yorkshire.

We stopped off in Matlock on the way back, parking up and walking along the little promenade, where we popped in for some chips and had a look at all the fun motorbikes coming in. If you've never been to Matlock, then i'd highly recommend it, but do get there early for parking if you want a full day there. Its a peak (see what I did there?) place for bike enthusiasts, always has been.

That's it for us this weekend, but it was such a lovely little walk, and you could go on a narrow boat if you wanted too, so we may have to do that next time. Oh! And we claimed a new patch for the bag.

Until next time, Happy Hiking! 🥾
